Windows Update Restart prompt message

i think every windows user will be familiar this message after Windows Update. After your windows update and continue doing other stuff. This windows message pop ups at the end and immediatly gets the focus, even if you are in a game or watching a fullscreen movie. You have the option to restart now or later. The first would result in an immediate reboot while the second would nag you again in 10 minutes. This will be annoying if you cant reboot your computer at that time.

There is a trick to delay the message prompt or choose other interval times for remind you to restart. Here is the step how you can disable or delay the reminder:

  • Click Start -> Run.
  • Type gpedit.msc and press OK.
  • Browse to Local Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update.
  • Right-click on Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations and select Properties.
  • You can select Disabled to completely disable the reminder or select Enabled and adjust the length of time between reminders.

    I don’t believe disable actually works. According to the documentation, Disable does the same thing as Not Enabled which is a default reminder time of 10min. I would love someone to prove me wrong though.

    you’re right swyrd

    on the “Explain” tab for “Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations” it says this:

    “If the status is set to Disabled or Not Configured, the default interval is 10 minutes.”

    Set it to the max limit of 1440 seconds. I can deal with a prompt once per day. A restart is required to make the change effective (or you can stop the Automatic Update service, which will work until you can reboot.)
