I had the same problem, and I had read a lot of forum, but nothing. I started to pulg the player in the usb connector for many times, and for the 30th time or something, the pc recognized it. If you grab it out, and put it in again, it wont recognize again, but somethimes it works. Or you should try to plug it in, and push the little button at the bottom side to reset it, try doing this until it will recognize. Hopefully it will work!

Connect your Sony Walkman on the computer and then push the button to format Sony Walkman (usualy you will need a pinpoint or somthing sharpening). I did this and my Sony Walkman works (initialy my computer did not recognise the Sony walkman) !

I have the NW-E00? (its a purple one with 512mb - yeah an older one)
The problem is that after pushing the reset button - nothings happening anymore on display and there is no sound as well but when I connect it via USB to my laptop everythings fine.
I can transfer data and music (i started to use jSymphonic instead of sonicstage...great programm btw (jSymphonic))
The Display says (while connected to laptop) usb connect so everythings fine here as I wrote but as soon I unplugg it from pc theres nothing anymore!
Any solutions someone?

As stated above by Cornet, you can use an open-source software called jSymphonic to transfer files to your mp3 without sonic stage. It can be found at http://sourceforge.net/projects/symphonic/
Make sure that you follow the instructions and set the proper data in the info file so that the software will recognize the full capacity of your mp3.
It's a basic software that runs direct off of your mp3, meaning that you can use it on any computer, even *gasp* A MAC! I've been using it since I got the mp3 player because sonic stage blows.
If anyone has a solution for making the NW-E005 truly drag and drop, please share it with us!

Thanks
