July 13th, 2006 at 5:52 pm
MP3 File Manager is program made by Sony and it is possible to use it with earlier models (NW-E103/E105/E107/E403/E405/E407/E503/E505/E507) /sony official web page/. I just hope that Sony will build drivers for nw-00 series too…

yeah.. ..you would think so.. ..but they havnt yet, and for that i hate them. i will never buy a sony walkman ever again!!! ..the sonic stage software is the worst application i have ever seen! ..on the walkman you can only search by artist, so if you have a compilation, you spends 30mins trying to find and delete all the tracks from the walkman.. ..stick with samsung or something..
DONT BUY IT

then it will work again, but you will have no songs on it so you will need that uberdodgy sonicstage app.

Thank Thomas so muchhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sonyvietnam cheated me! How fool I am!
I had this trouble before. I formatted my usb with Windows and then i kept saying: FORMAT ERROR. I took my USB to a warranty office of Sonyvietnam. The next day, they called me and told me that my USB had a virus prevent me from listen to music and I had to pay about US$5 for the repair.
Today, I accidently formatted my usb and everything happened like it did before. I tried my best but those words still appeared. Thank God, I searched Google and found this page and followed your direction and the problem has been solved!
I don’t know how to say thank you.

I have just bought a second NWE005, as I really get on with it, however when I connect the second one to my computer, I am asked to load the disc.I was hoping to use the both players using only one sonic stage.I am reluctant to load it in case my original player wont work.Any suggestions please.Pat
December 4th, 2006 at 6:07 pm
there should be no reason why you cant just plug it on and it works, but having said this, i have never tried.
i bought one of the nws706 walkmans over the weekend, 4gb with noise cancelling!!!
its fantastic, so far much better than the e005, in sound quality and usability.

You’re awesome!
December 24th, 2006 at 10:07 pm
Hi, I used to have the same “CANNOT PLAY” problem, and after comparing files that could play with those who couldn’t, it turned out that the problem was with the “Audio sample rate” of the unplayable files (you can determine it if you right-click your mp3 file->Properties->Summary tab->Advanced button), E507 supports 44.1KHz+ Audio sample rate, so I downloaded the new version of SonicStage (4.2) and there’s an option to change the bitrate before transferring files to the player (Tools->Options->Transfer->Transfer Settings), I changed it to 48kbps (to maintain minimal file size cuz the files are audio books so there’s no real need for quality here) and it worked since then. I’m not sure the older versions of SonicStage have this feature but you can check before you download the newer version, may be you won’t need the new one.

You should format the player from the player itself and not from Windows, as in this support article:

Hey guys,
If someone could help me with this, it would be great. I’ve used my player at one computer with SonicStage with no problems and now I’ve tried to use the program on my computer — I’m running Windows ME with IE 6.0 and SonicStage 4.2. However, for some reason, I can’t register my computer with them so I can’t transfer music anymore. It just keeps saying that I have to download those versions of IE and sonicstage that I already have! Any ideas? Thanks!

help!!
i’m extremely unhappy with the nw-e005 player. i got it as a xmas present for my girlfriend but she can’t use it yet.. the problem is that sonic stage doesn’t see it. i think there’s a problem with its drivers not being properly installed. i’m running xp pro and it doesn’t show up in windows explorer either. i downloaded the firmware upgrade but the program says there is no device to upgrade!! having to use the crappy sonic stage to transfer music to it was bad enough but now i can’t even get there.. any suggestions?
January 15th, 2007 at 4:24 pm
yuci, are you having problems with all your other usb devices too?
..it could be the usb controller drivers, in which case download the windows drivers (not firmware) fromyour laptop or motherboard maker.. ..another solution may be to set the player to work in 100mA mode (standard usb is 500mA), this can be done by going to the advanced settings -> power settings -> 100mA (this is from memory so it might not be accurate, but its in advanced settings somewhere).
hope this helps.
January 15th, 2007 at 10:29 pm
If you don’t like to use sonicstage to transffer your music to sony flash serie try voidMP3. I tried it and it’s awesome.
These are the main advantages:
– You can drag&drop MP3 folders from your hard drive and put them to walkman
– You can also drag MP3 files from you hard drive to the existing folders on your walkman
– You can delete MP3 files and folders on your walkman
– To get your files back – drag MP3 files and folders from your walkman to any folder on your hard drive
=> bypasssed sony’s protection so
sonistage is no loger a necessary
The program is installed on the nw-xxx player itself and can be used on any computer to download or upload the music.
You can play & search mp3 files by directories or songs.
The program can be found on
http://www.drvoid.com/
No need to thank me
)
Enjoy!!!
P.S. Post your comments!

hi thomas!
thanks for the advice. i set the player to work in 100mA mode but same result.. and no, i’ve never had any problems on this pc with usb devices before.. on the other hand, i did try the player on my sony vaio laptop and it worked, i.e. it was recognized correctly, etc. both being sony products, i guess they liked each other..! however, i really need to get it to work on the home pc for my girlfriend (the actual owner) to be able to use it. and at this point i’m really very unhappy and frustrated. i can’t return the player, either. i live in romania and there is no customer satisfaction policy or anything like that here. so i’m stuck with this useless piece of junk which cost me almost 200 euros (another downside to living in romania). what a pisser..!
you know, if sony is for some reason trying to push more people to go ahead and buy ipods instead, well, they’re on the right track.. i refused to buy the zillionth ipod and contribute to apple’s near complete monopoly in portable music players, and now i’m almost sorry i haven’t.. yes, i’m VERY unhappy at this point.
marijan: thanks for the tip on the voidMP3 player. sounds like what sony should have made in the first place. i’d love to give it a try as soon as i get the little bugger to work.
sorry for the rant..

I have a problem my walkman keeps on saying FILE ERROR and i cannot listen to any of my music
Can anyone help me?
January 19th, 2007 at 12:45 pm
I think I’m having the same problem as Yuci. I plug it into my computer and all it says is “USB Device Is not recognized” and it doesn’t show up on Sonic Stage either. I tried the “format” and the “100mA mode” as previously stated, but it still doesn’t work. I don’t know what I’m looking for anymore. I’ve re-installed the Sonic Stage program countless times and I even tried to downgrade the program by installing my Net MD 1.0 version S.S., but still it doesn’t work. Someone please help?
I’m not sure if this is relevant, but this is a second-hand device (I got it from my god-bro because he personally filed a complaint against this mp3 and then switched to an iPod)

Can u drag and drop files onto the player as if it is a usb storage device (so it shows up on My Computer as a removable disk drive), like the Creative muvo products do?
April 13th, 2007 at 8:52 am

i have a nw-E003F sony walkman and when i try to play a song it keeps on saying walkman file error.what should i do?
May 21st, 2007 at 11:48 pm
Anybody know where I can get NW-E005 repaired ? I bought it brand new from ebay and after about 2 months the player started behaving strangely. When you were playing a track the player would start to skip to another track by itself. It gets worse, the player now when playing a track automatically increases the volume and the next track button doesn`t seem to work. I have no idea what is going on. I can`t seem to find anyone who does repairs. Sony do repairs but they charge a minimum of £70 for out of guarantee repairs which is more than the value of the player now. Because I bought it on ebay I think that invalidates the warranty and so I can`t send it to Sony. Any help appreciated.

hi all ,
i have the same problem as simon and jana … my mp3 keeps telling me file error when i choose playlist or when i choose a song by searching ,,, can anyone help ?!!!
June 24th, 2007 at 1:29 pm
I’m having the EXACT same problem as Yuci, red and Keisha. Every time I plug my NwW-E003F into the USB drive windows tells me ‘USB Device Not Recognised
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.
For assistance in solving this problem click this balloon’
I have clicked the balloon and done everything it’s told me to but it doesn’t work, read the manual countless times, read the online manual, installed the firm-ware update and have looked ALL over the internet for an answer. But nothing has worked.
I’m pretty sure it’s a problem with the driver software. I lost the CD that installs the driver for it. I’ve looked all over for a downloadable version but I can’t find one.
Does anyone know where a downloadable driver for the Sony NW-E003F is? If you do please tell me, I’d really appreciate.
Thanks, Grey.

Could somebody, maybe upload the CD I need? I’m sure it’ll help alot of people that are having the same problem.
Thanks again

Having the same problem with my NW-E005F mp3 player –My PC won’t recognize the player. I have uninstalled SonicStage, cleared the registry, reintalled SonicStage 4.0, have tried SonicStage 4.3, formatted the player from the player itself (through the advanced menu), cleared our the SonicStage library – NOTHING, NADA – ZIP!
The only thing else that I can think of is its either the player itself or a MicroSoft update that kills the driver?? Any help is appreciated – I now have a time keeping device that I can wear on an armband…. piece o’ crap!

Hello everyone,
I bought NW-E003F about 3 months ago and I was very happy with it. Features, design, battery life is great, SonicStage not so much but you can’t have everything. However last week my mp3 player stopped detecting as some of you were saying here, I tried it on different computers where it always worked and it did not detect there too, even though it was charging fine. So I looked on forums and did not find any answers, my last step was to disassemble and see if I can fix it. Well, the sad truth is that people who had it working before for a bit and don’t have it detecting anymore is that your USB connector pads that are soldered on the PCB due to structural pressure ripped the middle two traces off (which are the USB data lines). Since USB connector is plugged in and all of the pressure is transfered on to the circuit board it eventually brakes apart the connections and you won’t be able to connect to PC. Now solution, If you are under warranty, send it for replacement, if not – like me you have only one choice (besides buying), try to fix it.
Disassembling it is very easy, there are only 5 screws, with one hidden under the “vol” label. Soldering connections with small wire from the connector to the PCB is another story. I am a computer engineer and could not believe that they put such thin traces on a potentially moving connector, OF COURSE IT WILL BREAK! So if you have a microscope and very good thin soldering station try fixing it cause in my case it worked, but generally it is tricky. For everyone else, if you player doesn’t have that problem, BE CAREFUL PLUGGING IT IN USB !!! Cause it will break for sure, question is when and hopefully “when” will come at a point when 1 GB or 2 GB is not enough for you.
Good luck,
Val.

Please help if anyone know how to solve this problem
I have been working on the same problem for long too, when I first bought it, my laptop could’t recognize it so I thought it might be because of my computer..so I try my frends com, it works.. then i install SonicStage in his computer.. when I try to transfer the songs, the SonicStage can’t seem to recognise the USB .. I try and try… now don’t know what to do.. I bought it Sigapore now I am back in my hometown.. can’t bring for repair…it is such a waste of my money almost 200$

Anybody know where to download the drivers for Sony NW-E005
August 6th, 2007 at 5:23 am
Hey!
I have been stupid enoug to use windows explorer to format, not knowing it could be done trough sonicstage as well. I have the NWE016. It has no ’settings’ button, though I can find a setting menu. It has no such things as initialize or format in it.
Trying to reformat with sonicstage won’t work, it sais ‘failed to delete all files’
I hope there’s a way to get it back to work.. otherwise this was an expensive mistake!
thank you very much in advance!

Hi Val i think your right
“I bought NW-E003F about 3 months ago and I was very happy with it. Features, design, battery life is great, SonicStage not so much but you can’t have everything. I thought it was a driver problem but i have taken mine apart and i can see one of the USB pins has come away from the PCB but the bit the track goes to is so small (i had to use a magnifier glass to see it) i don’t think i could solder it back but who knows it might be worth a try it’s not much good as it is.

The same issue with me. Recently it started showing the malfunction message on my laptop. Initially i too thought that it was a software issue as the player was charging perfectly, but the more i go through this thread the more convinced i am that it is a hardware issue. Will try dismantling it and see if can get some thing on it .. any instructions / precautions related to disassembly are welcome

Hello,
I am experiencing a problems with my NW-e505, I tried to upgrade the firmware of the NW-e505 from version 1.0 to 2.0. When the updater gets to about 39% and the player changes from “Program Checking” to “Program Writing”, the screen goes blank. The windows side of the updater keeps going, and when it gets to 99% it hangs up, eventually giving me an error message about the update timing out. After this happens, i have to push the reset button to get the player to work again.
Now, I cannot re-apply the upgrade since the NW-e505 shows not free space 0 bytes free and I cannot fix it by format it (i tried it like a million times, no luck).
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi,
I’ve tried mp3 file manager for my nw-e003f and it doesn’t work, it says “CANNOT PLAY” so I’ve discovered a few things.
The first thing I did was update my firmware. I came across this and decided to do it. After the firmware though mp3 file manager still didn’t work for me so I went to look for another alternative…
http://esupport.sony.com/CA/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=NWE003F&upd_id=2351&os_id=4
The second thing that really worked for me instead of mp3 file manager or sonicstage is JSymphonic. It uses Java or something so make sure you have it but you can read up on it yourself. So I plugged in my device used the JSymphonic program and it works. All you music files need to be in “My Music” folder then you import and then hit the disc button (save) which then the songs will transfer into your mp3.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/symphonic/
Hope it helps ~<3

I opened myNW-E003F to clean it. Dust had made its way inside around the play/stop and the home buttons and was visible through the transparent plastic shell. Used a small electronics slot screwdriver from Radio Shack to remove two screws on either side of the USB connector and one underneath the volume sticker. After that, unsnapped the transparent plastic cover with my fingernails, cleaned it, reassembled and it looks like new again.

Has someone already found a crack/solution for playing straigt mp3’s on the NW-E005 without using sonicstage?
Thanks
July 20th, 2010 at 10:16 pm
As stated above by Cornet, you can use an open-source software called jSymphonic to transfer files to your mp3 without sonic stage. It can be found at http://sourceforge.net/projects/symphonic/
Make sure that you follow the instructions and set the proper data in the info file so that the software will recognize the full capacity of your mp3.
It’s a basic software that runs direct off of your mp3, meaning that you can use it on any computer, even *gasp* A MAC! I’ve been using it since I got the mp3 player because sonic stage blows.
If anyone has a solution for making the NW-E005 truly drag and drop, please share it with us!
Thanks

I have the NW-E00? (its a purple one with 512mb – yeah an older one)
The problem is that after pushing the reset button – nothings happening anymore on display and there is no sound as well but when I connect it via USB to my laptop everythings fine.
I can transfer data and music (i started to use jSymphonic instead of sonicstage…great programm btw (jSymphonic))
The Display says (while connected to laptop) usb connect so everythings fine here as I wrote but as soon I unplugg it from pc theres nothing anymore!
Any solutions someone?
