ADVERTISEMENTS
rsizr is a flash-based online image resizing tool that lets you perform seam carving edits on your uploaded photo in real time. You can resize, rescale and crop JPG, PNG, and GIF images on your computer.
rsizr is based on Seam Carving, a technique developed by Dr. Shai Avidan and Dr. Ariel Shamir. rsizr offers an implementation of this resizing technique using a novel algorithm that allows for real-time retargeting along the horizontal and vertical axes simultaneously. Lets see the video presentation on content aware image resizing for an introduction to this new image sizing technique.
On the rsizr main screen, there are tabs with buttons that allow you to perform different functions with the image.
The resize functions tab has 3 image resizing tools:
- Retarget – allows you to change the size of your image using the seam carving technique. Image retargeting using seam carving allows an image to change sizes without distorting key areas of interest. Go to the retargeting page for more information.
- Preserve – Areas marked with the preserve brush will be avoided by horizontal and vertical seams. When the image is resized either down or up, these areas will remain unchanged.
- Remove – Areas marked with the remove brush will attract horizontal and vertical seams. When the image is resized to a smaller size, these areas will be removed first. When the image is resized to a larger size, these areas will be multiplied first.
- Erase – Use this brush to remove markings made with either the preserve brush or the remove brush.
- Rescale – allows you to change the size of your image using standard, uniform scaling. Go to the rescaling page for more information.
- Crop – allows you to reframe your image, removing unwanted areas. Go to the cropping page for more information.
To retarget image, simply upload any JPG, PNG, or GIF image from your computer.

Use the “Preserve” brush to mark interesting areas and keep them intact, use the “Remove” brush to mark areas that will be removed when shrinking the image.

Then drag the vertical slider and horizontal slider on the sides of the image to create seams. It will take a few moments to calculate seams depending on the size of your image and area selected.

Shrinking the image is interesting where it can remove parts of the image completely.

After finish resizing the image, click on the Save tab to save your work in JPG or PNG format.
It is really impressive, can be used to completely remove objects from a picture. It would be better if it has undo/redo function to resume last actions.
