Pligg beta 8 is an opensource Web 2.0 Content Management System (CMS) that works like the way Digg does on its site. Pligg has the similarity like Digg which offers submits news and gives its membership to vote the site’s contents. This mean giving them the chance to build a social network.

Pligg is unique and flexible compare to other content management system because the core structure of Pligg is built on PHP/Mysql and using the smarty template engine. This has allows site administator has the ability to control their pligg’s site by controling users, change any text and design in the template, backing up their sites (files and database) and configure all of the site’s options. With little knowledge about PHP and MySQL, you also able todo your own Pligg’s site quickly and effortlessly.

The requirement to install Pligg is installed a recent version of PHP and MySQL. You must be able to access a MySQL database for storing data
In the new version 8, One of the major differences is that Pligg uses a template engine called Templite Lite allowing the Pligg community to make their own templates. the rest of the new features show as below:-

  • Admins can configure their Pligg site with the Admin Config in the Admin Panel
  • Backing up your files is as easy as clicking the mouse. Backup your files and database any time you want.
  • Speed up your Pligg site 30% (aprox.) with the new Templite Lite template engine.
  • Multiple security fixes.
  • Admin can easily track users for better spam protection.
  • User can upload their own avatar,
  • Easily view stories you or your friends have commented on
  • Better search optimizations
  • Enhance your Pligg site with thumbnails that allow you to preview the story link
  • New antispam measures so you have control of the links that are submitted on your Pligg site.
  • Admins can choose HTML tags to be allowed in story descriptions.
  • Your users can email stories from your site to their friends or family.
  • Users can bookmark their favorite stories to Delicious, Digg, Reddit, Simpy, and Yahoo.

    I’m interested in running a Pligg site, however I’ve never created my own templates before and I’ve noticed there really aren’t many additional templates available. How hard do yout think it will be to try and put together a new template?
