Internet Explorer 9 Preview, the latest Internet Explorer 9 test version that released by Microsoft for public testing. This Internet Explorer 9 Preview offers an early look at some of the features that Microsoft plans to integrate into Internet Explorer 9. The preview version will only run on 32-bit or 64-bit editions of Windows Vista SP2 or later or Windows 7. Vista users also need to have Internet Explorer 8 and DirectX 2D installed before they can install the platform preview.

Meanwhile, IE9 perhaps is the first version of Internet explorer that support supports HTML5, bringing it up to the level of Chrome and Safari as well as certain newer versions of Firefox. According to Microsoft, IE9 brings to the table expanded support for HTML5, but also hardware-accelerated graphics and text, and a new, evolved JavaScript engine, designed to boost the overall performance of the browser. Obviously, Microsoft has improved all aspects of Internet Explorer 9 since the browser was first introduced at PDC 2009. In this context, hardware acceleration is applied to both HTML5 and SVG.

So, Users should read the release notes for known issues and other information about the release. Microsoft plans to update the preview releases every eight weeks. This is mainly offered to get feedback from web developers. A beta will follow later on.

Developer Tools

The Platform Preview includes built-in Developer Tools. These tools help developers debug and understand the interaction between their sites and the browser. To open the Developer Tools, click the Debug menu and click Developer Tools, or press F12.

The status bar indicates when the page generates script errors. You can use the Developer Tools to get more information about and debug script errors.

For more information on the Developer Tools, go to the Internet Explorer Developer Center.

Document modes

You can force the Platform Preview into different document modes. To do this, click the Debug menu and select one of the Document Modes. You can also press Alt plus the numbers 5, 7, 8, or 9 to select IE5, IE7, IE8, and IE9 document modes respectively (for example, Alt + 7 for IE7). You can press Alt + 0 at any time to reset the document mode to the page default. The current document mode is shown for the currently viewed page at the left of the status bar. Information on Document Modes is available on MSDN, as well as on our blog.

Common Keyboard Shortcuts

At the PDC 2009 (Professional Developers Conference 2009), Microsoft spilled some details on the upcoming Internet Explorer version 9, a browser that will feature improved performance, new features, and the possibility of new standards. Microsoft started working on IE 9 from past three weeks to improve the rendering engine performance and to speed up the browsing experience for the users.a focus on improved font rendering, better standards support, and JavaScript performance.

According to the IE Blog, the Javascript rendering is faster than the its predecessor Internet Explorer 8, IE8 rendering engine performance is poor compared to the other browsers like Firefox, Chrome and Safari. But the early build of IE9 is faster than IE8 and close to other browsers performance tested with Webkit SunSpider test. The chart below shows the relative performance of different browsers on the same machine running the SunSpider test.

IE9 will support Acid3, DirectX Direct2D and other standards, including CSS3 and HTML5. This should improve the appearance of fonts and performance of text animation without requiring changes to the sites themselves.

The most interesting feature they are working on in IE9 is the graphics acceleration, IE9 can use the graphics card for the rendering graphics and text using DirectX technology installed on windows systems. Graphics hardware acceleration means that rich, graphically intensive sites can render faster while using less CPU.

You can read more from the IE team on this topic here.

iReader is a browser extension for both IE and Firefox. It can preview the site content before you click. iReader is a bit like Snap, which i found extremely annoying. Instead of showing you a tiny screen capture of where a link on a website lead to, iReader preview a list of text when links are moused over. Besides, IReader can be turn on and off by the users.

When ever you mouse over any Internet link iReader reads all of the text on the target link and instantly returns a summary to be previewed by you right in your browser. iReader gives you the essential meaning of the link in a short prioritized list and helps you decide weather or not to click the link.

IReader is really smart in creating pop-up summary of the content behind a link. But in performance wise, it took quite some time for the popup to appear. I think this is promising product, although it’s still a little buggy. Since iReader is in beta, so give it a bit of time for it to improve.

To download iReader, visit the IReader download page to get the latest version.

Microsoft recommends that all genuine Windows customers install IE7, and distribute IE7 as a high-priority update via Automatic Updates (AU). Automatic Updates will notify users when IE7 is ready to install and show a welcome screen that presents key features and choices to “Install”, “Don’t Install”, or “Ask Me Later”. Sometimes this screen is quite annoying for those who not yet prepare to install IE7.

Microsoft has provided a very simple registry key to block automatic updates of IE7 on your computer. Just download and install the registry file DoNotAllow IE7. This registry file will create a IE7 blocking registry key value in HLM\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Setup\7.0 the value DoNotAllowIE7 is set to ’1′. IE7 will not be available in Automatic Updates unless the registry value DoNotAllowIE7 is set back to ’0′.

Microsoft also provide a Blocker Toolkit for large corporates who may want to block automatic delivery of IE7 to prevent their employees from installing IE7. The free Blocker Toolkit can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center.
