GeoNames is a free global geographical database holds more than eight million geographical names covering coordinates, administrative divisions, postal codes, population, elevation and timezones. Users of GeoNames include Microsoft Popfly, Slide.com, LinkedIn, and Tagzania. GeoNames is a one-stop access to maps, data and other webservices with places and their coordinates (longitude/latitudes) for free download.

The geonames.org geographical database is available for download free of charge under a creative commons attribution license. Geonames.org contains over eight million geographical names and consists of 6.3 million unique features whereof 2.2 million populated places and 1.8 million alternate names. All features are categorized into one out of nine feature classes and further subcategorized into one out of 645 feature codes. The data is accessible free of charge through a number of webservices and a daily database export. Geonames.org is already serving up to over 3 million web service requests per day.

Geonames is integrating geographical data such as names of places in various languages, elevation, population and others from various sources. All latitude/longitude coordinates are in WGS84 (World Geodetic System 1984). Users may manually edit, correct and add new names using a user friendly wiki interface.

With GeoNames, you can:

search for names with our fulltextsearch (table based or displayed on map)

browse capitals, highest mountains and largest cities on map

browse names on map and show/hide feature classes and codes

bookmark maps

send maps via email

export names as character separated values (csv) file or as png image

edit names (wiki)

add new names to the database (for registered users)

geotagging of names (for registered users)

You can use the edit functions of geonames to correct spelling, correct the location of the place, add names and postal codes. You can also add names in other languages. If you are using geonames data on our website, you can have a backlink to the geonames edit page where your users can move and update a wrong entry.

For more info on how to use GeoName, read the User Manual.

Hipoqih.com is a system that allows to record georeferenced alerts and to receive them in mobile terminals (like PDA, mobile phones, desktop PC, laptops, Java Phone, etc.). Hipoqih works with GPS and it can to be used in any place of the world.

Hipoqih uses positioning systems like GPS, that these alerts can be received automatically when arriving at the corresponding point, so that the information arrives in the place that interests. It is a new form to see the Web.

With Hipoqih, you can:

Record alerts like in a georeferenced agenda, to put notes or internet URLs linked to a geopoint that will jump in your terminal when arriving there.

Subscribe to public alerts broadcasted from other people or organizations.

Share your position with other people and to see its positions. It allows you to know where your friends are (of course, with guaranteed privacy)

In order to use Hipoqih and to receive the alerts of hipoqih.com, you must register in the web and install the plugin in your terminal with GPS system to send your position and to receive the alerts.

You can put warnings like in a geo-referenced daily or connect URL associated to geopoint which will appear in your terminal when arriving to that point. You can subscribe to public warnings, share your position with people and see their positions. Hipoqih allows you to know where your friends and family are.

The Hipoqih plugins are free and available for PDA with Windows Mobile, Smartphone and PC with Windows XP, but will soon branch out and include Nokia N95, and GNU-Linux. You can download the Hipoqih plugin from http://www.hipoqih.com/descargas_pc_en.htm.

Hewlett-Packard has released a public beta of its new location based interactive software called “Mscapers” for Windows XP based computers. MScape lets anyone create interactive location-based games or tours for Windows Mobile devices.

Mscapes is a software suite and website to enable people to design, create and share location-based experiences, games and tours with friends, family and others, anywhere in the world. Anyone with a GPS-enabled mobile device running Windows Mobile can use the Mscapes client to play any of the created games as they move through the physical world.

What is mediascapes?
mediascapes are mobile, location-based experiences that incorporate digital media with the sights, sounds, and textures of the world around you. A mediascape blends digital images, video, audio and interactions with the physical landscape. Games, guided walks, tours, and destinations are among the mediascapes created to date.

What is mscape?
mscape authoring software and the mscape player enable people to design and play location-based experiences called mediascapes with friends, family and others, anywhere in the world. And www.mscapers.com is the place for sharing and downloading mediascapes on your GPS-enabled Windows Mobile devices such as HP iPAQ (http://www.hp.com/go/ipaq).

Unlike PC-based applications, mscape technology provides a highly interactive, fun and engaging experience when users are out and about in the real world. mscape’s context-sensitive logic, combined with GPS and mapping technology, allows gamers, travel, GPS and outdoor enthusiasts to take their experiences to a higher level. The solution is so flexible that different digital files can be overlaid in the same space and delivered at different times, depending on which other locations in the mediascape the user has already visited.

“Fundamentally, all of our mobility announcements are about helping people connect with each other around information that’s important to them,” said Debra Brackeen, HP Labs’ director of strategic initiatives. “All of that connection is happening with richer and richer media experiences.” And though Mscapes is not yet a finished product, HP is “putting it out there for the enjoyment of customers and developers.”

The mscape software is available for free download at mscapers Download page, you can create your own mscape which essentially overlays imaginary images over images based on real life.

Mscapers provides everything people need to develop their own mediascapes, including training and tips to get started with Mediascape Wizards Help Guide

For more information about mediascapes and the mscape tools for making and playing mediascapes, visit http://wiki.mscapers.com/bin/view/Main/WebHome. You will get more ‘hands-on’ approach to the creation of mediascapes, downloading the mscape toolkit and the use of the mscape maker itself.
