Bandwidth Controller – Limit Bandwidth Usage

Bandwidth Controller is a free network management software to enable you to monitor and limit bandwidth usage on your computer or local network. This tool provides network administrators with traffic shaping and flow control capabilities, including automated components for internet allocation and provision.

With Bandwidth Controller, you can set speed limits on file-sharing and peer-to-peer traffic. Give high priority to sensitive data streams like Voice over IP calls.

overview

Bandwidth Controller is a Layer 3 traffic shaper which means it is able to control all traffic that runs through the computer that it is installed on. It supports 2 types of network environments, Gateway Mode and Server-Free Mode (Router or Modem). Deployment for Gateway Mode involves installing the product on the main internet gateway computer for centralized configuration and management of all network streams. Server-Free Mode deployment requires installation of the product on each client computer on the network. Peer mesh will be create to automatically distribute bandwidth evenly between each client.

There are 3 editions of Bandwidth Controller:

  • Bandwidth Controller Personal is suitable for single user bandwidth management. (FREE)
  • Bandwidth Controller Standard is suitable for home and small office networks. Includes prioritization, server-free operation and speed limiting. ($29.95)

Can the Server Free mode determine the difference between traffic heading for the Internet and traffic heading for a file server?  I’d want to limit bandwidth use for the Internet only.
